FilmPoint’s “King of Shadows” The Best Award winner at 9TH Beijing International Film Festival

Malaysian-origin “King of Shadows” 3D animated movie, has won the Best Animated movie project award in the 9TH Beijing International “Belt and Road” Film Festival on 18TH April.

It's a co-production between Malaysia’s FilmPoint, China Film Animation, Shanxi's Weinan Cultural Group, Shanxi's Balance Pictures, Quantom Cloud Future, Beijing's A True Film and Anima Point. FilmPoint managed to beat out 29 other competitors (out of over 100 worldwide entries) to win the one and only grand prize (RMB 1,000,000). It also won the Blue Ocean Creative award (RMB 50,000) and was the only project to win 2 awards.

After the event, China Film Animation signed the agreement with FilmPoint to co-produce "King of Shadows" animated movie. China Film Animation is wholly owned by China Film Group, the biggest film group in China. “King of Shadows” is created and directed by Malaysia’s famous director Mr. Yoki Chin. It will be jointly produced by Malaysia's Mr. Han Chung Huat & China’s Mr. He Qin. We are deeply grateful for the support from FilmPoint team and everyone who has helped one way or another to make Malaysia proud. The 3D animated movie “King of Shadows” tells a story set in the Silk Road in ancient days of yore.

China Film Animation and FilmPoint formally signed the agreement to work together on the project and the project size is RMB 100 million. Mr. Yoki Chin thanks FINAS (Film Development Corporation Malaysia) for the kind support for this animated movie. The proposed budget was about RMB 30 million to produce a local animated movie. The project budget has now been proposed to be RMB 100 million which is 3 times larger than the original budget. Due to the increase of budget, the characters and overall quality needed to be upgraded from a local film to an international film, China Animation Group has given more time to FilmPoint to produce an international quality animated feature film.

“King of Shadows” is a family-friendly movie, planned to release worldwide in 2 years time. With the co-production opportunity with China Film Animation, and its strong distribution network in China and worldwide, this Malaysian original I.P. feature film, will be widely distributed in China and worldwide. The box office reference is "Coco" animation feature film which had a gross box office of RMB 1.2 billion in China alone. Mr. Yoki Chin, as the President of POSTAM (Post Production and Animation Association Malaysia), was also invited to represent Malaysia as a speaker to attend the recent 9TH Beijing international "Belt and Road" animation & Film Festival Forum.

Mr. Yoki Chin mentioned in the forum that Malaysian creative talents are world-class. He promoted more countries to co-produce with Malaysian companies, especially with the 30% FIMI (Film In Malaysia Incentive) rebate provided by FINAS, supported by the Malaysian government. Mr. Yoki Chin hopes that this animated feature film will be record-breaking for Malaysian-China co-production. He also hopes that "King of Shadows" feature film will create more job opportunities for Malaysians and grow the animation industry to greater heights together with all the talented Malaysian animators and animation companies!
