Mindfulness Training Recommended to Reduce Stress and Anxiety in the Workplace

Sydney-based Mindfulness Space recommends corporate mindfulness training as a way to reduce stress and anxiety that affects a large percentage of Australian workplaces.

Sydney, Australia - February 14, 2018 /PressCable/ —

Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in Australia with 1 in 4 Australians experiencing some form of stress and/or anxiety at some point. Mindfulness training as offered by Mindfulness Space is a proven method to reduce the symptoms of workplace stress and anxiety.

While stress and worry are common responses to situations where one may feel emotional pressure, it usually passes once the stressful situation has been resolved, or ‘stressor’ has been removed.

For mild symptoms of anxiety, lifestyle changes, such as regular physical exercise and reducing one’s stress levels may help. For levels of anxiety that begin to impact on one’s life, psychological and/or mindfulness interventions may be beneficial.

Mindfulness Space offers mindfulness training workshops in Sydney for workplaces, community groups, sport clubs and schools.

Mindfulness refers to the mental process that can be characterised by a state of nonjudgmental awareness of the present moment experience, including one’s physical sensations, thoughts, awareness, while encouraging openness, curiosity, and acceptance.

The basic premise underlying mindfulness practices is that experiencing the present moment nonjudgmentally and openly can effectively counter the effects of stressors because excessive orientation toward the past or future when dealing with stressors can be related to feelings of anxiety.

A review of 47 clinical trials involving more than 3,500 participants with mild anxiety found that those who underwent mindfulness training workshops experienced improvement in their mood after eight weeks, on par with the effect seen with prescription medications.

“By teaching people to respond to stressful situations more reflectively rather than reflexively, mindfulness practices can effectively counter experiential avoidance strategies, which are often attempts to alter the intensity or frequency of unwanted internal experiences,” said Paul Jozsef, principal mindfulness trainer at Mindfulness Space.

Through the application of mindfulness practices for mental health conditions such as anxiety, Jozsef claims that his clients are more resilient and better able to navigate the daily ups and downs of everyday life.

One of world's top urban forests threatened by tiny beetle

Aug 16, 2018

JOHANNESBURG — One of the world's largest urban forests is under threat from a tiny beetle. The polyphagous shot hole borer is thought to have made its way to Johannesburg from Southeast Asia on packing crates or through the trade in plant materials. Trudy Paap, a forest pathologist at the University of Pretoria, discovered the beetle in the Pietermaritzburg Botanical Gardens last year. She published her discovery in the journal Australasian Plant Pathology, calling it part of "the surge in the global spread of invasive forest pests" because of globalization. The beetle has since moved to Johannesburg, 320 kilometers (198...

Endangered Green, Loggerhead turtles make comeback in Cyprus

Aug 16, 2018

LARA BEACH, Cyprus — For these ancient reptiles, a stretch of beach on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus has been their home for thousands of years. Against the setting sun, the tiny turtles that have just hatched on Lara Beach strain against the surf to reach the Mediterranean Sea and embark on their life's journey. And in 20 to 30 years, they'll be back at this exact location to lay their own eggs. After being hunted to near extinction in the first half of the last century, the Mediterranean's endangered Loggerhead and Green turtles are making a comeback thanks to...

Vital US reservoir OK for now, but shortages are looming

Aug 16, 2018

DENVER — A vital reservoir on the Colorado River will be able to meet the demands of Mexico and the U.S. Southwest for the next 13 months, but a looming shortage could trigger cutbacks as soon as the end of 2019, officials said Wednesday. A forecast from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation echoes previous warnings that a nearly 20-year trend toward a drier regional climate coupled with rising demand could drain so much water from the Lake Mead reservoir that cutbacks would be mandatory. The report increases the pressure on seven U.S. states that rely on the river to finish...

Spacewalkers install bird trackers, send satellites flying

Aug 16, 2018

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Spacewalking cosmonauts set up an antenna for tracking birds on Earth and sent a series of tiny satellites flying from the International Space Station on Wednesday. Russian Sergey Prokopyev used his gloved right hand to fling four research satellites into space. The first mini satellite safely tumbled away as the space station soared 250 miles above Illinois. By the time the fourth one was on its way 14 minutes later, the station was almost to Spain. Two were the size of a tissue box, while the other two were longer. With that quickly behind them, Prokopyev...
